Memorial Day
Today in the U.S. we honor those United States Armed Forces veterans, combatant and noncombatant, who died while serving our country and upholding their oath to our Constitution (and we will remember all veterans in November). Earlier this month President Obama noted that it is also a half-century since Vietnam, and that we should never treat our veterans badly like we sometimes did then:
“This month, we’ll begin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, a time when, to our shame, our veterans did not always receive the respect and the thanks they deserved -- a mistake that must never be repeated.” -- President Obama, May 16, 2012

Earth sinks in the sea, the sun turns black,
Cast down from Heaven are the hot stars,
Fumes reek, into flames burst,
The sky itself is scorched with fire.

I see Earth rising a second time
Out of the foam, fair and green;
Down from the fells fish to capture,
Wings the eagle; waters flow.
- from the Völuspá

Woot!
My anthro teacher, who's now out of the hospital (pneumonia is bad!), submitted a recommendation letter for my grad school application. That's two of the required three, woooo! :D

Weekend
I've now got LibriVox audiobooks on my iPhone -- I listened to EVE Online podcasts yesterday, and a multi-person reading of "The Importance of Being Earnest" today. As for the rest of the weekend, Frolicon (Friday) was much fun! There were too many folk to mention, though. Still, here are a few special mentions: I drove to Chattanooga friday, and caught dinner with [info]oneeyedfreak, [info]zoegrace, [info]solfox, and [info]falfox. The latter two convinced me to stay there, so Saturday I drove down and said hi to Mari, Niko, and [info]gothiqroze before the con. At the convention the fair and lovely [info]humblepie let me borrow the other bed in her room; I am most grateful. And [info]silverdawnatl and Stesi came down to have dinner with me Saturday.

Saturday I drove home, found out the "wrench and pannier" light combo meant "change oil," not "OMG see a mechanic!" (um, newly purchased certified pre-owned, didn't you CHANGE THE OIL Ford? >.< Thankfully my salesguy helped). Saturday night I waffled on dinner plans, then around 7 PM (sunset) [info]leliel called and saved me from "But I'm not at the con!" blues. Sunday morning I joined her and [info]dhc10 to put flowers on the cross at church before the early service, then daytripped Easter lunch with my dad and stepmom in Huntsville. Then last night Ferret Rock hosted a small Easter dinner and games night that was much fun. Today? I enjoyed my last day of holidays/vacation, thank you! ;)

Dreamtime
Crashing waves set the scene: the old man struggles forth,
Hauling now his fishing dreams; his old boat wallows deep.
Some things must be seen.

Creaking bones pain the Celt; the Scotsman hones his axe.
Scars run deep throughout his pelt; he dreams of battles past.
Some things must be felt.

First two steps, and then a third, the fyrdmen march in ranks.
Dreaming of the kings own word, the levy waits for war.
Some things must be heard.

Fisherfolk brave the sea, warriors raid their foes
Soldiers drill for victory; poets weave their dreams.
Some things just must be.

Weekend
The weekend was enjoyable, though most of Saturday was napping with the Matter of Britain or dining with Mrs. C. and accompanying her on her registration visits for her baby shower (I brought a book! ;) ). Sunday I also had lunch with Mrs. C., had my Fiesta rinsed off (I swear there was a visible coat of pollen on it by the time it dried), and spent a couple of hours at work. Last night I bumped into Kelley from Giuseppes as well as Walt and Chalmers at Los Amigos; but Los Amigos won't let me have WiFi access, so I am not as likely to eat there now. Later I ran my first two EVE Online missions in six months, and bumped into Tongith, who is returning to EVE Online with his lovely wife in tow. Finally, after work today I wandered into the local Chik-Fil-A to be greeted by name and then asked if I were having my normal order -- before I opened my mouth? ^_^

The Sidhe considered him slowly, from head to toe. "Shall I tell you what you have left out?"
     "Have I left something out?"
"Nothing that would matter." The Sidhe reined Dathuil aside. "I take your bargain."
Caith had his sword still in his hand. He rammed it into its sheath and felt all his aches and hurts. He looked up again at the Sidhe, cold at heart. "What did I leave out, curse you? What did I forget?"
"You are not apt to such bargaining," said the phooka, there in young man's shape, leaning naked against a tree at his right hand. "I will tell you, mac Sliabhin. You forgot to ask your life."

"Oh," Caith said. "But I didn't forget."
"How is that?" said the fair Sidhe.
"If you want some use out of your curse, you can't kill me too soon, now can you? It would rob you of your revenge."
The phooka laughed, wild laughter, a mirth that stirred the leaves. "O mac Sliabhin, Caith, fosterling of murderers and thieves, I love thee..."

I AWOKE in the Midsummer not to call night, ' in the white and the walk of the morning:
The moon, dwindled and thinned to the fringe ' of a finger-nail held to the candle,
Or paring of paradisaïcal fruit, ' lovely in waning but lustreless,
Stepped from the stool, drew back from the barrow, ' of dark Maenefa the mountain;
A cusp still clasped him, a fluke yet fanged him, ' entangled him, not quit utterly.
This was the prized, the desirable sight, ' unsought, presented so easily,
Parted me leaf and leaf, divided me, ' eyelid and eyelid of slumber.

Shinto
When sorrow lays us low
for a second we are saved
by humble windfalls
of the mindfulness or memory:
the taste of a fruit, the taste of water,
that face given back to us by a dream,
the first jasmine of November,
the endless yearning of the compass,
a book we thought was lost,
the throb of a hexameter,
the slight key that opens a house to us,
the smell of a library, or of sandalwood,
the former name of a street,
the colors of a map,
an unforeseen etymology,
the smoothness of a filed fingernail,
the date we were looking for,
the twelve dark bell-strokes, tolling as we count,
a sudden physical pain.

Eight million Shinto deities
travel secretly throughout the earth.
Those modest gods touch us--
touch us and move on.
- Jorge Luis Borges, tr. Hoyt Rogers

Shinto

Wait, wha?
In a Star Wars: The Old Republic forum post on titles I tried to explain that I objected to my Republic Trooper being called "Sir!" because you don't call NCOs "Sir!" (or "Ma'am!"), or refer to them as an officer. Three different gamers missed the point and had to pipe in with "It's a gender-neutral title!" I felt like I was talking politics with my friends. >.<
LOL --
I see that I failed at explaining what's cutting the strings on my suspension of disbelief. I'm perfectly OK with "Sir" being gender neutral (ditto on "Lord"). It's just that SWTOR borrows U.S.-style rank names but not one of the BIG conventions found in military customs.

If you know any Army, USMC, or USAF sergeants (or Navy petty officers), try calling them "Sir" (or "Ma'am," as U.S. military courtesies are gender-based). They will VERY quickly inform you that "Sir" (or "Ma'am") is what you call commissioned officers or warrant officers, and it's NOT what you call non-commissioned officers (NCOs, noncoms) or other enlisted ranks.

I alluded to a common stereotypical response above: "Don't call me Sir, I work for a living" (or "Don't call me Ma'am, I work for a living," as appropriate). NCOs are the backbone of the military services, as well as the front line leaders; this custom is actually a form of recognizing that. It's a VERY big distinction you learn early on, and that's why it's so jarring that I can't quite enjoy the storyline.

Since several people responded as if this were a gender issue rather than a rank issue, I'm guessing that this is a "Who cares?" issue to those without the background. Maybe my explanation will help explain why some of us recoil from it when we encounter this oddity in the script. ^_^
Doesn't everybody?
After class last night (actually, during lab) the instructor mentioned Haldane's Law and evo-devo (Evolutionary developmental biology) in a side conversation with me while we were talking about the Neandertal and Denisovan genes found in Eurasian and East Asian populations.
[Dear Instructor:]
Thanks again for an enjoyable class last night, though I despair a little of the finer points of osteology nomenclature (but that’s part of why I’m taking this course). And thanks for mentioning Haldane’s Rule (viability of homogametic vs. heterogametic sex in hybrids and other crosses); I’ve no idea why I didn’t remember it from undergraduate days.

I did find myself a bit bemused after class. I'd mentally pigeonholed evo-devo as "embryonic development" (and its chemical clues), for which I'd seen a couple of Scientific American articles (alas, I don't often read actual journals except for specific topics). And I’d pigeonholed epigenetics as "sometimes inheritable changes in what genes are activated and inactivated" (and in my mind I was thinking of differentiated tissues, rendering heritability a moot point)... without realizing that in many areas they're pretty much two sides of the same coin; i.e., which genes get turned on or off, and how. As a safety guy with some toxicology this should have caught my eye earlier, since I'm always on the lookout for potential teratogens, etc. So thank you for that “Aha!” sense of wonder that comes in seeing the relationship between two distinct things.

Looking forward to next week,
~ Glas

Thou from whom my sentiment rarely strays,
ancient sarcophagi, I salute you,
conduit where exultant water of Roman days,
like a wanderer's melody, yet flows through,

or yonder tombs, open as the eyes
of a happy shepherd glad to rise
- wherein pale dead nettle and silence lies -
out of which flutter forth charmed butterflies.

All that is wrested from doubt's dark den
I salute: the voices which once more flower
after knowing silence's ways.

Do we know, or do we not, friend?
Both sides are framed by the reluctant hour
and chiseled on the faces of men.

SWTOR
I may be an overachiever; thanks in part to help on Nar Shaddaa from [info]rustdangel, I just finished my class storyline on Tatooine and gained Andronikos Revel as my third companion (counting the ship's droid) at level 24 (the rewards were level at the expected level of 27-28). But I like this; since I can only deploy two companions on Slicing missions (I'm at 287 skill), that leaves one to accompany me (Andronikos looks very silly in the moddable custom "Formal Headgear" from the social vendor on Drumond Kass).

Then there was what [info]blipangel told everyone on our PGGB mailing list:
I am placing a heavy emphasis on #2 for this- I know most of ya'll well enough to show up on your doorstep and pick a booger out of your nose without any scene. I would like to think that anyone new we bring in is of similar character and approach to life and gaming. We're all productive, reasonably well adjusted adults. This is a casual gaming guild with a bunch of like minded people- there is ZERO reason to be a weinie. About anything. (Not you, Glas- you're far from well adjusted and are welcome to bring your weinie into anything you want...)
I was VERY amused, and felt complimented. ;)

And I cannot even whine about this on Failbook; I keep getting "Something went wrong. We're working on getting it fixed as soon as we can" whenever I try to update Failbook using Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer. >.<

Something I was gonna post there
It's not "nature vs. nurture"; it's "nurture IS nature" (to a limited extent). The DNA in our chromosomes and mitochondria gives us our cellular blueprints, but our "epigenetics" are the chemical and other clues that tell, say, a liver cell to not act like a kidney cell. And in some cases changes to these chemical cues from things like stress, diet, or other environmental factors can be inherited by an organism's offspring. It's one of the reasons that naturally occurring human clones, er, twins and triplets, aren't identical despite pretty much having the same DNA.

"Text" used to mean books...

As far as I can tell, back around 1975 William H. Bassichis published his first version of Don't Panic: A Guide to Introductory Physics for Students of Science and Engineering, which has now expanded to three volumes. Yes, that was a few years before the late Douglas Adams pitched the radio show version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to BBC Radio 4 in 1977. It just amuses me to this day to have a book sitting around with Don't Panic! on its cover. (Why, yes, I do have my towel in the above pic.)

Come Again?
With apologies to Yeats...*
Things at camp are fine; I like the place;
Fall has made the leaves so red. We are
Apart from the bustle of the world. I like the pace.
The counselors awake us, and the rare
Center of the camp is where we meet.
Cannot say the food is bad; we always
Hold out for seconds. And work and play are fun,
Mere diversions in the day. It almost stays
Anarchy. The only question now
Is when we’ll all leave here. When we are freed,
Loosed on our friends and home, we all will bow,
Upon our leaving, and then we all shall read
The letters we have writ. We soon shall see
world, and folk, and all we hope to be.

I burned a day of vacation/holidays, yet I am sitting in my office. This isn't bad, though: it means that I badgered the pest control contractor into actually showing up... *gasp!* After briefly dropping by my office, I dropped the Matter of Britain off at Ferret Rock for the afternoon and caught lunch with [info]leliel at Firehouse, blissfully unaware that my (leasing office arranged) contractor had decide that he'd come Monday instead of after 1 PM Friday. I washed the car, ran a few errands, and then sat around the apartment wondering where the contractor was. Finally, a bit after 3 PM, I finally reached the leasing office again (surprising in and of itself, as Engel's leasing office is merging with Blue Canoe Realty). Faith tracked down the contractor, explained that I'd taken the afternoon off and made arrangements for pets, and we got a replacement out around 3:30 P.M. Know what they do? They SPRAY A FRIGGIN' BOTTLE OF WELLMARK INTERNATIONAL'S PRECOR 2000 (they used to be Zoecon). >.< Ah, well; done! ^_^

Edit:
Whoa, per Wikipedia the permethrin in Precor 2000 is "highly toxic to cats"... good to know! Wikipedia also says "Permethrin is toxic to cats. Many cats die after being given flea treatments intended for dogs, or by contact with dogs having recently been treated with permethrin."

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun

Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Dinner last night I caught at Rojo's with [info]childofmetis, [info]ro_dan, [info]quitecontrary80, and the latter's new boyfriend, Joe (New Orleans native, now a local ICU nurse). And this morning I caught breakfast at the Old Pancake House with soon-to-be-a-DVM [info]darkover_exile, in town and staying at her sisters (after the squatters moved out and Engel fumigated the upstairs, my vterinary student friend's sister moved in above me!).

Shinto
When sorrow lays us low
for a second we are saved
by humble windfalls
of the mindfulness or memory:
the taste of a fruit, the taste of water,
that face given back to us by a dream,
the first jasmine of November,
the endless yearning of the compass,
a book we thought was lost,
the throb of a hexameter,
the slight key that opens a house to us,
the smell of a library, or of sandalwood,
the former name of a street,
the colors of a map,
an unforeseen etymology,
the smoothness of a filed fingernail,
the date we were looking for,
the twelve dark bell-strokes, tolling as we count,
a sudden physical pain.

Eight million Shinto deities
travel secretly throughout the earth.
Those modest gods touch us--
touch us and move on.
- Jorge Luis Borges, tr. Hoyt Rogers

Shinto

Family values
Over on Failbook I commented "OK, I think that Neil deGrasse Tyson is sexy (currently, that is; the old sideburns and t-shirt photo is a bit 80s! >.< ). Does that make me an astrophysics groupie?" My dad the lawyer replied: "To what extent is he really a heavy hitter and to what extent a popularizer?" Then he corrected someone on who demoted Pluto (it was Huntsville native Mike Brown). Now THAT'S family values (smart is sexy)!

Light Reading
Here's some light reading for later, continuing the trend of regularizing Dangerous Goods (and associated IMDG and IATA consensus standards), and applying it to workplace safety standards (one MSDS to rule them all!). My webinar on such (that I'm listening to now) was actually on everybody's chemical inventory and tracking systems... I really wasn't listening to the changes in Indonesia, Turkey, Korea, or elsewhere. But it did update me on changes in Mexico, that I used to keep up on, etc. And it touched on GHS implementation elsewhere.

On to the Internet.com article --
It's Time to Rethink Chinese Tech Manufacturing
February 24, 2011, by Mike Elgan
IT Management Daily / The Internet.com Network

I love my iPhone 4. It's sleek, elegant, durable and very high quality.

But after reading a recent report by Apple, I started thinking about the workers who make the gadgets and computers in our lives. Were they children coerced into lying about their age by their own schools? Were the workers poisoned with illegal industrial chemicals?

What's my responsibility in all this? After all, we chose to buy the devices we love in part because they're both affordable and high quality. Is all that made possible by the pain of abused factory workers?

Worse, it has become clear to me that, despite promises of reform by all concerned, the problems of Chinese manufacturing are not going to get better any time soon.

Apple Finds Factories Rotten to the Core
Last week, Apple released a document called The Supplier Responsibility 2011 Progress Report, in which they detailed findings of a series of audits of factories that make Apple hardware. Apple also laid out their intentions in the report for addressing the problems they discovered.

The report says 137 workers in factories where Apple products are assembled were poisoned by a nasty chemical called n-hexane 137, which was used without Apple's knowledge or permission. The chemical causes cancer, brain damage and other health problems. Some workers exposed have even publically appealed to Apple for help.

Less than one-third of the factories that make Apple products even appear to comply with Apple's rule that workers can't work more than 60 hours per week or 6 days per week. Many of the workers who make our gadgets work 7 days a week.

Slightly more than half the factories even appear to comply with Apple's safety standards. That's far better than the average Chinese factory, no doubt. One New York Times report from about three years ago offered up this gruesome statistic: In the Pearl River Delta area, where some of the most intense manufacturing takes place in China, workers collectively lose about 40,000 fingers per year.

Apple reminded us of the 13 suicides and suicide attempts at one Foxconn plant alone. One of those suicides was by a man who made a dollar an hour and had averaged more than 70 hours a week during the previous month, in violation of Apple's employment rules.

Some 30 percent of the factories Apple inspected failed standards on emissions, hazardous material management and environmental permits.

In some cases, Apple gave factories lists of demands for improved working conditions to keep earning Apple business. In others, Apple terminated its contract. One factory alone was found to be employing 42 child workers. Apple found that the factory was conspiring with a local school to falsify IDs and threaten kids if they didn't lie to auditors about their age.

The Poet Loves a Mistress
But Not to Marry

- Robert Herrick
I DO not love to wed,
Though I do like to woo;
And for a maidenhead
I'll beg and buy it too.

I'll praise and I'll approve
Those maids that never vary;
And fervently I'll love,
But yet I would not marry.

I'll hug, I'll kiss, I'll play,
And, cock-like, hens I'll tread,
And sport it any way
But in the bridal bed.

For why that man is poor
Who hath but one of many,
But crown'd he is with store
That, single, may have any.

Why then, say, what is he,
To freedom so unknown,
Who, having two or three,
Will be content with one?

Weekend
Most of this weekend was spent fighting this stupid cold, though the company was good and the new book quirky but interesting (Colleen McCullough's The First Man in Rome, gifted me by [info]childofmetis). Mrs. C. checked on and ate meals with me at least daily, and I caught The Rite with Ms. Scientist on Saturday at the Edge (for me it was ok?). And on the radio I've been enjoying the return of our quasi alt-metal station, The Vulcan, after 17 months of no such thing.

If I seem overly introspective about this cold, it's because it's hit me like a truck despite me doing all the "right" things to mitigate it (fluids, extra sleep, zinc tablets, Desenex, generics of DayQuil/NyQuil, even pre-emptive petroleum jelly to keep my poor nose from become too chapped). Still, it looks like just a bad cold, not the flu (no severe chills indicating a high fever, no more than mild nausea and GI upset, et cetera). I'm in my office at the moment (Monday morning), but at the urging of my boss I'm out for yet another sick day (I promised that I'd go home within the hour). >.< So other than the cold bringing me dizzy days and strange dreams (Civil Rights Movement!?), it's not been a bad weekend. ^_^

I TOLD YOU that I was charmed with her in most particulars.

There were some that did not please me so well.

She was above the middle height of women. I shall begin by describing her.
She was slender, and wonderfully graceful. Except that her movements were
languid--very languid--indeed, there was nothing in her appearance to
indicate an invalid. Her complexion was rich and brilliant; her features
were small and beautifully formed; her eyes large, dark, and lustrous;
her hair was quite wonderful, I never saw hair so magnificently thick and
long when it was down about her shoulders; I have often placed my hands
under it, and laughed with wonder at its weight. It was exquisitely fine
and soft, and in colour a rich very dark brown, with something of gold.
I loved to let it down, tumbling with its own weight; as, in her room,
she lay back in her chair talking in her sweet low voice, I used to fold
and braid it, and spread it out and play with it. Heavens ! If I had

Today I took off to celebrate yesterday's birthday; caught lunch with [info]leliel at Giuseppes (where Kelly commented as we were leaving that both Mrs. C and I must have sipped from the Fountain of Youth, bless her); walked Delta in the rain (barely a drizzle); and wandered myself by Books, Beans, and Candles to watch Mitchell and Nancy play with a digital Cannon (maybe an EOS Rebel, I don't remember?). No matter the winds I bind with strings and knots

No matter the trail or virgin blaze I trek
across the land, or whither I go and stop
and sing as through its woods I go, my path
is my own, and shared 'tis not, alas.

Happy

Weekend
Working backward, this morning was SNOWPOCALYPSE! Which really isn't that bad. And OK, it actually started yesterday, but I was glad when I got word at 6:30 AM that I wasn't needed at my university (though it was closed, I might still have been called in as I'm "essential personnel"). The above 10 AM pic of Highlands Golfcourse, which sits opposite my apartment, was from the grocery store and shopping strip next to me (where I am happy to report both the Piggly-Wiggly and Forest Perk are open... mmmm... hot chocolate! ^_^ ). I'm kinda glad that I didn't drive, though I did thaw out my car. That F150 that's parked askew? Young guy in his late teens or early twenties came sliding across the parking lot only somewhat in control before stopping there so that he and a girl of similar age could hop out. I suspect that drivers like him are a higher risk that the ice on the road! ^_^ Yesterday was a little lazy; after church I hung out at Ferret Rock until the sleet started coming in around mid-afternoon. And Saturday I helped (a little) with raking leaves, etc., at Ferret Rock as well. Overall, a pleasant weekend -- if you don't mind the snow / sleet / ice / slush / whatever we have frozen to our streets this morning! ;)

House of Suns
From my GoodReads review of Alastair Reynolds' new novel House of Suns:
As usual, I love Alastair Reynolds' hard, crunchy SF; this was no different. I should likely note that this one isn't set in his Revelation Space universe but in a different milieu, one from which I hope we see other stories. As an aside, I did like one bit of fun foreshadowing -- but I am not sure I would have caught it had I not had some familiarity with the scale of the Local Group?

Hmm... I cannot even remember what day last week Will B. came through town and caught dinner with me, [info]leliel, and [info]dhc10 (hereinafter "That Cute Couple," for they have been utterly adorable when I've been around them). I've caught several meals off and on with That Cute Couple, including utterly delicious hibachi at Stix last night, but I don't think it's been the daily thing such things often are. I've read books; I am most lately reading David Weber's A Mighty Fortress in hardback after reading its predecessor in paperback. My apartment seems more roomy (er, I may have gotten up to seven bags of recyclables). Sunday School drove me a little nuts yesterday; we saw a DVD, and I can tell that Rob Bell has read a bit on everything from the (strong) anthropic principle to basic cosmology to quantum chromodynamics, but could he PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE not confuse quarks and leptons (that's why I posted yesterday's post)? And other Bad Science stuff. >.< Today I caught lunch with Katarina, even though I was on vacation / holidays. New Years Eve I caught Man or Astro-man? at the Bottletree after finding out that [info]9jack9 and Steven G. had spare tickets, and bumped into [info]tenshihitomi's friend Sarah Beth there. I chatted with dogs and my cat (OK, those may have been one-sided conversations, though it seemed to increase the frequency with which the Matter of Britain slept on me). I had a long, pleasant weekend. ^_^ There: a jumbled, non-sequential, yet ultimately happy update, much like my memories of this long weekend now passing!

I obviously do not speak the same language as my peers? [Jan. 2nd, 2011|11:30 am]
[Current Mood |awakeawake]

It not infrequently happens that something about the earth, about the sky,
about other elements of this world, about the motion and rotation or even
the magnitude and distances of the stars, about definite eclipses of the
sun and moon, about the passage of years and seasons, about the nature
of animals, of fruits, of stones, and of other such things, may be known
with the greatest certainty by reasoning or by experience, even by one
who is not a Christian.

It is too disgraceful and ruinous, though, and greatly to be avoided, that
he [the non-Christian] should hear a Christian speaking so idiotically on
these matters, and as if in accord with Christian writings, that he might
say that he could scarcely keep from laughing when he saw how totally
in error they are.

In view of this and in keeping it in mind constantly while dealing with the
book of Genesis, I have, insofar as I was able, explained in detail and set
forth for consideration the meanings of obscure passages, taking care not
to affirm rashly some one meaning to the prejudice of another and perhaps
better explanation.
from St. Augustine's The Literal Interpretation of Genesis (1:19–20), A.D. 408

Good advice
Saint Augustine of Hippo, a 4th to 5th century Roman African now revered by both Protestants and Catholics, wrote a work called The Literal Interpretation of Genesis. He made the point that the Bible is not intended to be a science text book, and trying to take it too literally can be a very bad thing. 1600 years later, his advice still rings true! >.<

With the scriptures it is a matter of treating about the faith. For that reason,
as I have noted repeatedly, if anyone, not understanding the mode of divine
eloquence, should find something about these matters [about the physical
universe] in our books, or hear of the same from those books, of such a
kind that it seems to be at variance with the perceptions of his own
rational faculties, let him believe that these other things are in no way
necessary to the admonitions or accounts or predictions of the scriptures.

In short, it must be said that our authors knew the truth about the nature
of the skies, but it was not the intention of the Spirit of God, who spoke
through them, to teach men anything that would not be of use to them for
their salvation (ibid., 2:9; I'm using quotes from Catholic.com)

That reminds me

Christmas Weekend
Snow in Alabama! Christmas EVe [info]hearthwitch and [info]samguss had me over, as well as [info]pelmen78, [info]mela_dori, their little one, and the Smiths. With all the snow that started coming down Christmas Day, I postponed my trip to Huntsville; [info]pelmen78 and [info]mela_dori invited me to join everyone at their place about twenty minutes east of town, but I decided to stay in Southside. I was doubly set on staying put in Southside with all the snow coming down after I was almost rear-ended by two young men in a white sedan that fishtailed on the I-65 ramp over near Ferret Rock (I was speeding up to join traffic and was at maybe 30-40 mph), and then rocketed past me and up I-65 at 95+ mph despite the presence of ice. On Boxing Day I did make the drive two hours north to spend two hours with my dad, Elizabeth, cousin Bill, and uncle Edwin in Huntsville; there was a full snow layer on the ground north of Cullman, and the side roads on Monte Sano were still fully covered in snow (the picture above is the main road on Monte Sano, which was clear). Monday I used a day of vacation but came in long enough to have lunch with Katarina. And last night I wandered by Ferret Rock and picked up [info]dhc10 and [info]leliel for dinner at Giuseppes.

Bang for the buck
I had something I thought about saying about what we don't get for our taxes, and how our middle class -- once America's strength -- is shrinking. But it pointed out that the European Union and Canada pay less and get more, and I don't think that we can see that here in U.S, much less understand it. It doesn't fit the memes that govern how we see the world around us. So forget it. Go have a happy new year! ^_^

XIX. The Need to Avoid Contempt and Hate.
Now, having talked about the most important of the qualities enumerated above, I want
to discuss the others briefly under this generalization: that the prince should, as I
have already suggested, determine to avoid anything which will make him hated and
despised. So long as he does so, he will have done what he should and he will run no
risk whatsoever if he is reproached for the other vices I mentioned.

He will be hated above all if, as I said, he is rapacious and aggressive with regard
to the property and the women of his subjects. He must refrain from these. As long as
he does not rob the great majority of their property or their honour, they remain
content. He then has to contend only with the ambition of a few, and that can be dealt
with easily and in a variety of ways. He will be despised if he has a reputation for
being fickle, frivolous, effeminate, cowardly, irresolute; a prince should avoid this
like the plague and strive to demonstrate in his actions grandeur, courage, sobriety,
strength. When settling disputes between his subjects, he should ensure that his
judgement is irrevocable; and he should be so regarded that no one ever dreams of
trying to deceive or trick him.

The prince who succeeds in having himself thus regarded is highly esteemed; and
against a man who is highly esteemed conspiracy is difficult, and open attack is
difficult, provided he is recognized as a great man, who is respected by his subjects.

Life
Last night I wandered up to Huntsville's Thursday Therapy with [info]leliel and [info]tenshihitomi. It was good seeing Sam and [info]naught and Ben and Amy and [info]jjmaccrimmon and [info]valiskeogh and Brendan/Tongith and [info]gwenhwyvar and [info]mystcbrd and so many others. Even the bartender recognized me (he used to date [info]quitecontrary80). I drove the first half of the leg home, then slept the rest of the way; it was around 4 AM when [info]tenshihitomi and I made it back home from Ferret Rock and our gracious ride. Today I have a day off and [info]tenshihitomi is hanging out; I've little idea what else we'll do this weekend. ^_^

Furriners
I tell ya...
What's the nationality of the man who controls America's most conservative cable news network?
What's the nationality of the man who started Wikileaks?
I tell ya, gotta watch them Down Under foreigners! ;)
(Australian friends, note that this is tongue in cheek ^_^ )

Almost
I almost posted pics of the family I saw outside Piggly-Wiggly yesterday.
Blocking the firelane (and route for wheelchairs, etc), three sat in their car --
Doors ajar, mom in front, teen daughter (?) in passenger, teen son in back.
They were glaring at everyone, so I said nothing --
I just made a point of taking pics.
(But I'm in a good mood today.)

Woot!
I was worried about a spot that looked infected on the Matter of Britain's face. So today we went to the vet, had it looked at (I'll keep applying neosporin), and got her her annual allergy shot. We also had her chipped. Now she's home and getting treats every hour or so. ^_^ (Yah, this would've been part of my DragonCon money, but she's very worth it. ^_^ )

Midnight on Lugnasad [Aug. 1st, 2010|00:10 am]
[Current Mood |lonelylost]

Midnight Miles
How many miles are in a midnight minute?
How many lives can every second hold?
Why are these paths so long and yet so few?
How can these thoughts walk lonely through the night?

Midnight is a time of artifice;
No star nor moon will mark its passage nigh.
Existing only in the meaning given --
And yet it is so real for humankind.

Alone I think the thoughts of lonely people
So common and so shared in loneliness.
Each one of us is trapped in our own prison --
And though we are the same we do not share.

But this is life, and this is what I'm given.
And when the night brings sleep...

Eve of Lammas
I was glad to hear from Kenndra earlier.
Had we stayed together, today would have been our 19th anniversary.
But I am also aware that I am more often tolerated by friends than desired, humored than enjoyed.
And that I am sitting here with the Matter of Britain, and am otherwise alone.
(No, I don't want anyone on my Friends list to reassure or send hugs, I'll be fine.)
